Emily Ahrens Yates is currently All But Dissertation on her Ph.D. in Fine Arts, in Music Theory, from Texas Tech University.  She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Theory and Composition from Texas Christian University in 2007 and 2009, respectively.  

Yates is currently an Adjunct Professor of Music Theory at UTA where she teaches Music Theory, Aural Skills, and advanced Music Theory classes. She has taught Music Theory and Aural Skills at Texas Tech University from 2011-2013, at UTA from 2010-2011, and at TCU from 2009-2011.

Her research areas include work on Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, Russian Folk Music, Ascending Urlinie, and octatonic and artificial scales.  In October 2013, Yates presented her paper “Movement Unification Through the Tritone in Britten’s War Requiem” at the “Benjamin Britten: A Century of Inspiration” international conference held at Texas Tech University.

She is also an accomplished bassoonist, having taught in many DFW school districts and performed with various ensembles both as a visiting bassoonist and on a regular basis.
